What is Rice Blast Disease?

Rice blast is one of the most destructive fungal diseases affecting rice plants in Bangladesh and worldwide. It’s caused by the fungus Magnaporthe oryzae, which affects leaves, stems, and even grains.

Symptoms of Rice Blast

  • Spindle-shaped grayish lesions with brown borders on leaves
  • Black spots on leaf sheaths and panicles
  • Stem weakening and lodging
  • Grain loss and poor filling

Causes of Rice Blast

  • High humidity and frequent rainfall
  • Dense planting and poor air circulation
  • Excessive nitrogen fertilizer use
  • Use of infected seeds or soil

✅ Control and Prevention

  • Use resistant varieties: BRRI dhan50, BRRI dhan51
  • Proper spacing: Avoid dense planting
  • Balanced fertilization: Avoid excess nitrogen
  • Apply fungicides: Tricyclazole or Carbendazim as per guidelines
  • Remove crop residues: Burn or compost infected parts

By early identification and adopting proper preventive measures, farmers can avoid major losses from blast disease.
